This will be a masked conference. Please don't argue with me on this. New Mexico has a public masking (both inside and outside) directive at this time. While that may change, a lot of people are signing up and speaking with the understanding that everyone will wear a mask. The exception is when eating or drinking. For speakers onstage, there will enough distance between the audience so that he/she will not have to wear one onstage. We are also looking at a possible stage shield for further protection.
At issue is self protection. The fact is, many of us are elderly, have side issues, and are undertaking this endeavor at what we perceive to be at great risk. The virus is a deadly invisible entity that is spread by seemingly healthy people. There is no way of knowing who might be a source of the virus and who is clean... therefore personal choice does not work.
It is not a political issue, but necessary to comply with current regulations, and to fulfil obligations made to participants at this time. This not the time or place to argue the efficacy of masks, nor make a political statement. Given the choice between having the conference and getting out good technical information, or taking the hardcore individualistic stance, I would expect one to opt for the greater good... and keep the conferences going! ... wear a mask!
Limited seating... At this writing it appears that seating space at the hotel will be limited to 50% capacity. Although this may change by the time of the conference, I encourage you to preregister early to insure you have a seat. Vendors will be spaced out to allow for social distancing. I expect the entire length of the hall to be used. Again, everything is first come, first serve.
The hotel is going all out to insure we have a safe environment. In addition to social distancing, there will be sanitation stations throughout the facility. We are exploring ways to increase the dining capacity on the patio and weatherproof it against rain.
This will be a 'safe' event. We take the virus seriously, but with due diligence, self discipline, and common sense, it can be contained I will keep you informed if there are any changes as I know them.
In the meantime I encourage everyone to plan ahead and register today.

We will be following whatever the State of New Mexico requires conferences to abide by. That may include spacing between seats. We will use desk style seating which provides more space front to back. Such a requirement may have a dramatic effect on the number of seats available... so I encourage everyone to sign up early as I do First Come First Served when it come to registrations.
It is still my belief that a few prudent measures like frequent use of antiseptic agents, not shaking hands, and avoiding direct contact with others will go a long way to prevent infection. Masks ARE important in that they serve as space... and if both parties are wearing them it magnifies the effect! We are requiring their use. On a personal note, I prefer to drive or ride trains to conferences as they are roomier and more private than planes.
While I am not going to let FEAR (False Expectations A ppearing Real) dictate my life, I still have to live in the real world. We are faced with a situation that is creating chaos at record levels unlike anything I ever expected to see in my lifetime. In a nutshell, we are fighting an invisible enemy that is spread by victims that do not show any signs of infection while initially contagious. Furthermore, while we have seen this family of virus before, this particular one is a complete mystery but there a lot of world class researchers analyzing it.
There is only one way to conquer this microbial denizen... information! Testing... testing... and more testing is the ONLY WAY we will know the true scope of what we are facing. Furthermore... complete transparency and honesty in reporting numbers is critical! GIGO... Garbage In... Garbage Out! We need accurate numbers (no fudge please) in order to make informed decisions. Mass quarantine (and the resulting hysteria) is only necessary when testing is insufficient.
We also need to know more about the nature of this virus. Obviously we don't have a natural resistance to it... is this an escapee from a biowarfare lab? How does it react to heat... cold... electromagnetic waves... does it have a natural enemy? These answers can only be found through more research!
We will be holding the ExtraOrdinary Technology Conference as planned. Traditionally, flu seasons end with warmer weather...this pathogen seems to be enveloped with a lipid liquid layer that insulates it from heat. There may not be any seasonal respite from this critter!
Nonetheless, I believe with the number of researchers working on this issue, someone will come up with a workable resolution soon. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to take precautions to stay healthy and... make a commitment to attend the 2020 ExtraOrdinary Technology Conference in August by registering today and taking advantage of our super discounts while they last!!!!
